Why Consider Kegging Homebrew?
When you first start out brewing your own beer, you will probably be filling bottles. Many starter kits aimed towards beer making beginners come with a bottling system, bottles and caps. However after awhile, you may grow tired of putting your brew into bottles and decide you want a more convenient way to store and drink your beer. This is where kegging homebrew comes in handy. Home brew kegging is a great way to store larger amounts of beer without fiddling with lots of bottles. Read on to learn more about the homebrew keg.
The type of keg commonly used is a five gallon size Cornelius style keg which can also be utilized for soda such as homemade root beer. When first introduced this type of keg was made for holding soda syrup, which these days is stored in a boxed bag. The size of this keg makes refrigerator storage easy. These kegs come in two different types, pin lock which used to be used for Coke syrup and ball lock. These terms apply to the way the connectors are attached to the keg. Pin lock kegs use radial pins while ball lock kegs use ball bearings that are spring loaded.
Kegs need to be properly sanitized before use. Many people end up buying a used keg, and if you are one of them make sure the keg you select has been reconditioned. This means the keg has new parts, has been tested against leakage and has been professionally cleaned. You must refrigerate your homebrew keg, if you don't want it in your kitchen there are special refrigerators you can buy for keg storage.
Another item you're going to need for home brew kegging is tank of CO2 which acts as the pressurizer, carbonator and dispenser. Used tanks can save you a lot of money, and when you have it filled you probably won't even get the same tank back as the shop usually just switches your empty tank for a full one.
Kegging homebrew is a great way to store larger amounts of homemade beer, and also perfect for parties and gatherings. As a home brewer you probably want to show off your creations and by kegging them you have an easy way to store and serve for get togethers or just anytime.
